TUIK has the data on GDP of Turkish provinces (totally 81) by three sectors namely agriculture, industry and services. Figure -1 shows the GDP shares of top ten provinces over 2004-2017. Istanbul, by far, has been the largest contributor of GDP in this period. It constantly remains above about % 30. Ankara is the second largest city followed by Izmir and Manisa. Having almost similar figures Bursa and Kocaeli took 5th and 6th places respectively. The remaining 71 cities accounted over % 35 of the GDP, while their share has been decreasing since 2011.

Agriculture

Figure – 2 illustrates the shares of provinces in Agricultural GDP over 2004-2017. Konya, Antalya, Manisa, Izmir and Mersin have been the major agricultural producers in this term. The production in Antalya have been volatile. More specifically, it had an increasing trend during 2004-2010 and a down- trend over 2011-2017. While Antalya has been the leader over 2005-2011 in agricultural production, Konya suppressed it from 2011 onwards. Konya have been the only city which had a value over % 5 between 2013-2017.

The remaining 74 provinces had their largest shares in 2004 and in 2005 with % 80.6 and %80.4. However, their contribution to agricultural production decreased on coming years. Over 2006-2017, the share of remaining 74 cities remained below % 80. Specifically, in 2014, their share bottomed-out at % 77.8.

Industry

Figure – 3 shows the shares of Turkish cities on GDP created only by industry over 2004-2017. Istanbul has been by far the largest producer however having a slightly diminishing trend from 2004 at % 32.4 to 2017 at %29. Ankara was the second largest contributor having its biggest share in 2010 at % 9.5 and its smallest figures in 2017 at %8.1. 3rd place have been occupied by both Bursa and Kocaeli throughout the period under study. In 2017, Kocaeli surpassed Bursa and took the 3rd position. Tekirdag and Gaziantep have been placed in 5th and 6th positions respectively having almost similar figures at about % 2.3. The aggregated shares of other 74 cities demonstrated by the red line has improved from 2004 at %35 to 2017 at %38.

Services

Figure – 4 shows the shares of Turkish cities on GDP created only by services over 2004-2017. Istanbul has been the major producer in this sector having a seven-year average at % 34.6. Ankara has come 2nd with a seven-year average at % 10.8. It was followed by Izmir, Antalya and Bursa respectively. The total share of remaining 76 provinces has a stable appearance remaining at about % 41.
